Digestive Health

With over 100 million American suffering from digestion issues, it is time to have a gut intervention!  Digestion imbalances are not only limited to the typical bloating, constipation, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome and heartburn/acid reflux but also, allergies, arthritis, auto immune disorders, chronic fatigue, acne and more. These symptoms are the warning signs that treacherous roads are ahead leading to many degenerative diseases!  Like Hippocrates stated over two thousand years ago, all disease begins in the gut. Your gut health is directly related to your overall health and well-being and that is why it is imperative to cleanse, replenish and rebuild this delicate eco-system living within us.  The balance of your intestinal flora (probiotics) is not only crucial for your digestion of food but also your immune system and mental health.

Experts suggest a healthy colon cleanse 2x per year!

Our Core Cleanse program was designed to allow for the digestion of lingering food particles that adhere to the intestinal wall and colon which bacteria and yeast thrive on. It is estimated that the human body can hold up to 5-25 pounds of this “build up” which can be seen by an inflamed protruding belly. So not only will bacteria and yeast be reduced but also the inflammation that follows with an unhealthy gut. Utilizing a combination of Digestive Health and Core EFA’s, your GI tract will be cleansed of harmful pathogens, replenished with broad spectrum digestive enzymes and rebuilt with pH stabilized probiotics and the proper prebiotics to allow for continued growth and colonization of the “good” bacteria. To maintain a healthy gut year round, doctors and experts have recommended a cleanse program to be utilized twice a year. With our specific protocol and recipes, you will not only be able cleanse the body but also replenish and bring balance back to your eco-system.

The Core Cleanse is a 30 day program that consists of 3 bottles of Digestive Health and 3 bottles of Core EFA’s. The protocol is as follows:  Take 2 Digestive Health capsules and 2 Core EFA gel caps on an empty stomach 3 times a day. Continue this regime for the full 30 days to see maximum results along with your current Core Health Products regime.

What is the difference between juicing and blending for whole juices?  The difference is simple.  Juicing extracts the liquid from vegetables and fruits leaving the fiber behind.  Blending, on the other hand, is pureed into a smooth, liquid form with fiber and all.  So, which is better?  It all depends on what you are looking to accomplish.  Both methods have many health benefits.

Juice is the liquid and about 90% of the nutrients from the fruit or vegetable.  When made fresh and kept raw, those nutrients stay intact.  Juicing is the easiest way to get phytonutrients in their most absorbable form straight to the bloodstream.  There is little, if any, digestion required.  Since juices are predigested by the juicer, the body can shift its healing efforts to other more critical efforts.  The main purpose of juicing is to repair and renew.  In addition, the enzymes are alive and aid not only to make digestion and all other metabolic processes work, but also help repair our DNA and RNA.

Here are some top notch juices that have been recommended for detoxing and repairing our major organs:

Liver Detox Lemon Shot

Admittedly this is not a scrumptious, mouth-watering recipe. However, when the digestive system needs a rest and a cleansing, this eye opening shot will help detox the liver and stimulate the gall bladder.  Since the liver is the major detoxifying organ of the body, debris often accumulates in the gall bladder.  A shot like this one will build body tissue and help with better assimilation.

1 organic lemon, well-scrubbed and cut in quarters

1 ounce Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

1 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil

6 ounces of clean water

Add a sprinkle of cayenne

If you need to, sweeten with a bit of stevia

If you have a high-powered blender, such as a Vitamix, chop up the lemon and add the remaining ingredients.  Blend at high speed for 30 seconds. Filter with a sieve and enjoy!  Otherwise, juice the lemon and blend in the remaining ingredients.

Do not eat for 60 minutes after your shot. If you have gall bladder problems, you may want to start slowly and only sip a few ounces.

For the following juices, place all ingredients through a juice extractor and drink.

Colon Cleansing Juice

2 medium carrots

2 stalks celery

1 apple

Liver cleanse juice

2 dandelion leaves or handful of spinach leaves or 2 large cabbage leaves

½ cup broccoli florets

1 cup cauliflower flowerets or 2 large Brussels sprouts

½ cup chopped parsley

1 red apple

1 clove garlic or 1 small radish (optional)

Liver detox juice

3 red radishes

1/4 red onion

2 stalks celery

1 bunch kale or collard

1 carrot

1 handful cilantro (coriander)

Gallbladder juice

3 red radishes

2 stalks celery

1 green apple

1 carrot

1 handful parsley

Stomach soothing vegetable juice

2 medium carrots, peeled

1 green apple

1 handful fresh parsley

1 handful fresh mint

2 stalks celery

Stomach juice to reduce gas and abdominal bloating

1 cabbage leaf

1/3 inch slice of fresh ginger (less if too potent)

3 slices fresh pineapple (more if needed)

4 to 6 fresh mint leaves

Blending, on the other hand, is very beneficial also.  Blending is an easy way to pack those nutrient dense leafy greens into your diet.  Green smoothies are more filling than juices since they contain fiber.  Fiber is essential for keeping your system clean and running smoothly.

Below are my recommendations for the most nutrient dense smoothies that will detox the major organs and strengthen the immune system.  For the following smoothies, place all ingredients in a high-powered blender such as a Vitamix, blend until smooth and drink.

Liver nourishing smoothie

1 cup almond milk

1/2 cup fresh or frozen pitted cherries

1 heaped tablespoon ground flaxseeds

1 banana

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

The Healthy New Year Booster Smoothie

4 leaves of kale (remove stems)
1 medium daikon radish
1 Tbsp. maple syrup
1/8 Tsp. cayenne pepper
1/2 cup apple juice
Juice of half a lemon
5 ice cubes

Alkaline Green Smoothie

4 cups firmly packed organic baby spinach leaves

1 cup filtered water

1 medium avocado

1 red ruby grapefruit, juiced

1 English cucumber, chopped

1 or 2 cups of ice cubes depending on preference

1 inch piece of raw creamed coconut

3 Tbsp. coconut crystals or a few drops of stevia depending on your preference

Tips for creating your own taste preferences

Spicy addition -- To add a little kick or spice to your smoothie or juice, select your spices that will add to the taste:

  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Celery seed
  • Ground cumin
  • Turmeric
  • Hot pepper sauce
  • Fresh ground pepper

Sweeteners Options -- Instead of sugar, feed it with natural alternatives:

  • Organic apple juice is a great natural, seasonal sweetener
  • Maple Syrup
  • Honey
  • Dates
  • Agave Nectar (raw or not overly processed)

Super foods Super foods are whole, natural foods that provide more vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, fiber, phytonutrients, and antioxidants than other foods:

  • Acai Berries
  • Almond Butter
  • Aloe Vera Juice
  • Avocado
  • Chia Seed
  • Flax Seed
  • Ginger
  • Pumpkin
  • Sprouts
  • Wheatgrass

Foods selected for juicing and blending that help to cleanse the liver

  • Garlic-Just a small amount of garlic has the ability to activate liver enzymes that helps your body flush out toxins. Garlic also holds high amounts of allicin and selenium, two natural compounds that aid in liver cleansing.

  • Grapefruit-High in vitamin C and antioxidants, grapefruit increases the natural cleansing processes of the liver. A small glass of freshly-squeezed grapefruit juice will help boost production of liver detoxification enzymes that help flush out carcinogens and other toxins.

  • Leafy Green Vegetables-One of our most powerful allies in cleansing the liver.  Extremely high in plant chlorophylls, greens such as bitter gourd, arugula, dandelion greens, spinach, mustard greens and chicory literally suck up environmental toxins from the blood stream. With their distinct ability to neutralize heavy metals, chemicals and pesticides, these cleansing foods offer a powerful protective mechanism for the liver.

  • Kale, another super green is for the poor over-loaded liver. It also boosts mood and adds a healthy winter glow to your skin with its super-dose of antioxidants.

  • Avocados-This nutrient-dense super-food helps the body produce glutathione, which is necessary for the liver to cleanse harmful toxins. Recent studies indicate improved liver health when avocados are eaten regularly.

  • Cold-pressed organic oils such as olive, hemp and flax-seed are great for the liver, when used in moderation. They help the body by providing a lipid base that can suck up harmful toxins in the body. In this way, it takes some of the burden off the liver in terms of the toxic overload that many of us suffer from.

  • Turmeric helps boost liver detox, by assisting enzymes that actively flush out known dietary carcinogens.

  • Lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup add some heat which kick-starts the cleansing process!

  • Daikon radish is said to help break down fats. White roots and vegetables like daikon also have a scrubbing affect in our bodies and scrub out our digestive system.

  • Wheatgrass juice is highly regarded for its nutritional and therapeutic properties.  Containing one of the most potent concentrations of chlorophyll in nature, wheatgrass juice cleanses the blood, detoxifies the liver and gastrointestinal tract of debris.  Other benefits include reducing over-acidity in the blood and neutralize environmental pollutants.

  • To detoxify our bodies, the best thing we can do is to boost our liver’s own detoxifying enzymes, and one of the most potent inducer is a phytonutrient called sulforaphane.  Broccoli is an exceptional source of sulforaphane but is not activated until chewed or broken down in a blender or juicer.
