Do You Need an Oil Change?

Core Health Blog: Do you need to change your oil?

Oil is a crucial component to your car’s operating system allowing for proper lubrication, cooling and efficient engine operation. Because we rely so heavily on our cars on a daily basis and have hefty monthly payments, we take extra care in changing the oil and keeping up with the maintenance required to keep it working optimally. Why then do we not put the same amount of care into the one body we have been given? Unfortunately, we do not come with an indicator light that tells us when we are low or out of balance but if we listen closely, the sputtering becomes recognizable by the signs of pain, inflammation, depression, ADD/ADHD, Alzheimer’s and the list goes on.

Since the “Low Fat, No Fat” craze of the 90’s, fat has gotten a bad rap and we have become fat phobic as a society. You would think that would have made us healthier and decreased the obesity rates but actually, the opposite has occurred. We have seen more heart disease and more challenges with cholesterol but how could that be if we have eliminated the saturated, artery clogging animal fats out of our diets? The main contributing cause is the changeover to vegetable oil especially the partially hydrogenated vegetable oils better known as Trans-fats. And wouldn’t you know, the food industry happily obliged to using the cheap, shelf stable oil in everything from boxed and packaged foods to the tasty hamburgers from the drive-thru. Oh and do you want fries with that?

Trans-fats are a man-made fat that the body does not recognize. Vegetable oil (most often soybean oil) has been chemically altered by adding hydrogen gas which in turn results in a stiffer fat just like what you see in a Crisco can. Even though the vegetable oil naturally is low in fat and cholesterol, this process alters the fat structure causing it to become more artery clogging like bacon grease to the kitchen sink. It is neither plant nor animal fat anymore and therefore the body does not know what to do with it but store it. How long you may wonder? Well, the half-life of Trans-fat is 51 days meaning that french fry, potato chip or cupcake snack is still circulating your system three months from the day you enjoyed every last bite!! Now do you wonder why we have such a fat crisis today! Our bodies are being bombarded daily with the wrong types of fat causing major imbalances and diseases at alarming young ages.

Now do you wonder why we have such a fat crisis today!

The biggest threats to our health today are the increased amount of Trans-fat and the decreased Omega 3’s in our diets.

The adverse effects of Trans-fat trickle down to so many different areas in the body. Not only do they increase cholesterol (mainly LDL levels) but also insulin levels in the blood and contribute to insulin resistance. They damage the function of cell membranes causing our communication system of the body to be impaired leading to ADD/ADHD and Alzheimer’s. Our hormonal balance becomes skewed because the body requires the “good” fats for the production and transportation of hormones. One of the most notable adverse effects is how Trans-fat interferes and blocks the absorption of the Omega 3’s, the good crucial fats.

Omega 3’s or better known as the Essential fats are just that, essential to life! Our bodies do not produce these essential fats and as you have just read, we have a major imbalance between the “bad” and “good” fats. We need the proper fats to survive! Fats insulate the myelin sheath which surrounds our nerves allowing our brains to send communication throughout the body. Without the good Omega fats, our messages will contain “gaps” which leads to ADD/ADHD, Alzheimer’s and nervous system breakdown. So it is imperative now more than ever that we consciously make an effort to change the oils that we cook with and consume.

An imbalance of fats can result in:

  • Dry eyes and vision challenges
  • Hormonal imbalances and infertility in both women and men
  • Hair and skin issues
  • Cardiovascular challenges such as hardening of the arteries
  • Intestinal issues
  • Mental and behavioral challenges
  • Metabolic problems- obesity and even unexplained weight loss
  • Asthma and allergies
  • Diabetes
  • Auto-immune disorders

Step 1: If you are not consuming fresh, wild caught Omega rich fish on a weekly basis then you must supplement with a good quality Essential Fatty Acid daily to re-balance the fats in our bodies.

Step 2: Digest and utilize those good fats to their fullest potential with the proper digestive enzymes! Remember Shan’s favorite saying- Fats cannot be burned until first digested!!

Step 3: Read the ingredient list of all the foods you are consuming. Do not go by the flashy wording on the front of the package to tell you whether or not there are Trans-fats in the product. Look for words like partially hydrogenated oil or fully hydrogenated oil– if you see it in the ingredient list, put it back!

Step 4: Shop the perimeter of the grocery store and purchase more fresh, organic natural foods and less packaged and boxed products.

Step 5: Adapt to more of a Mediterranean diet with good fats such as olive oil, almonds, walnuts, avocados, flax oil and coconut oil (even though it’s considered a saturated fat- the health properties are amazing!)

Core EFAs is derived from pure Krill oil, the most bioavailable form of Omega 3’s in the market today. Its phospholipid fat structure resembles that of our brain and cell membranes so the body does not need to convert it to be utilized therefore it is more absorbable. Nutrient utilization over nutrient consumption! Consuming Core EFAs will allow all the systems of the body to function properly much like supplying our cars with the highest grade oil!

We deliver the best with Core EFAs because you deserve the best!
